Elassona is a small town in Larissa in northern Thessaly, at the foothills of the southern slopes of Mount Olympus. It acts as a quiet regional centre for surrounding farming and pastoral communities, and is best known as a gateway to the monasteries and hiking routes of the Olympus range.

Just above the town stands the most important monument in the area, the fortified Byzantine monastery of Panagia Olympiotissa Monastery. Founded in the 13th century, it features later frescoes and strong defensive walls, reflecting its dual religious and protective role in a turbulent frontier region. The views over the town and toward Olympus are particularly rewarding.
The Muharrem Paşa Mosque was built in the 17th or early 18th century during Ottoman rule, and is attributed to Muharrem Paşa, an Ottoman provincial governor (pasha). The minaret collapsed in the 20th century, but the building’s core prayer hall still survives in a ruined and partly deteriorated state.
The Stone Bridge of Elassona spans the Elassonitikos River just outside the town centre. Built in the Ottoman period (likely in the 18th–19th century), it is a traditional single-arch bridge constructed of local stone, serving as an important crossing point for rural routes linking the surrounding villages with Elassona.
The Ottoman Customs House is one of the surviving administrative buildings from the Ottoman period in Elassona. Built in the 19th century, it was used for regulating trade and taxation in this small but strategically placed town at the edge of the Thessalian plain and the approaches to Mount Olympus.
The Monastery of Agia Triada (Holy Trinity) is located near the mountain village of Sparmos on the western slopes of Mount Olympus. Set in a remote and forested landscape, it is a modest Orthodox monastery that reflects the long monastic tradition of the Olympus region, where isolated religious communities developed in close connection with nature and ascetic life.
The present complex is largely modern, but it continues the site of earlier monastic activity, likely dating back to the Ottoman period or earlier. The katholikon is simple in design, following the typical single-aisled church form, with later additions and restorations shaping much of what is seen today. While not architecturally elaborate, the monastery’s appeal lies in its peaceful setting and sweeping views over the surrounding valleys and foothills.
There is no railway station in Elassona; the nearest major rail hub is Larissa, with bus connections onward. Regional buses connect Elassona with nearby towns and villages, though services are not frequent.
