Privacy
Last updated: 17 October 2026
We collect as little personal data as possible. You can use every guide and tool without an account. This policy explains what we collect, why, how long we keep it and the choices you have.
If you create an account
- Your name, email address and a securely hashed password (we never store your password itself).
- If you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address and Google account ID from Google, and only after you agree on Google’s sign-in screen. We use them to create and sign in to your account, never for advertising, and we do not receive your Google password or access to anything else in your Google account.
- Optional preferences: passport country, home currency and language.
- Trips, itineraries, budgets, packing lists and places you choose to save.
We use this information only to run your account and the features you use. We do not sell it or share it with advertisers. You can change it or permanently delete your account and everything linked to it at any time from your account page.
How long we keep it
- Account data and saved trips: until you delete them or your account.
- Sign-in sessions: they end 30 days after your last visit, or when you sign out.
- Messages you email us: as long as needed to answer them.
Cookies and local storage
- Sign-in cookies keep you signed in. They are only set when you sign in.
- Language cookies remember the language you chose.
- Local storage on your device keeps your packing checklist and last passport choice.
- Your location is only used when you choose “Near me” in Explore places, after your browser asks for permission. It is rounded to about 100 m, used only to look up places around you, and is not logged or linked to your account.
- Analytics cookies (Google Analytics) are only set if you accept them in the cookie banner. You can decline and the site works the same.
Your IP address
On your first visit we look up the country of your IP address to suggest a language. The address is sent to a country lookup service, is not stored, and the result is cached for 24 hours under a one-way hash. Page view counts used for “trending” destinations are anonymous and contain no personal data.
Third-party services
- Maps load tiles from OpenFreeMap, and photos load from Wikimedia Commons, directly in your browser, so those services see your IP address as with any website you visit.
- If you use the AI option of the trip planner, the trip details you choose (country, places, number of days, pace and interests) are sent to Anthropic to draft the itinerary. No account or contact details are sent.
- Links to booking sites take you to those sites, which have their own privacy policies.
- Weather, routing and other data requests are made by our servers, not your browser.
Your rights
You can ask us for a copy of your personal data, or ask us to correct or delete it, at any time; most of this you can do yourself on your account page. Depending on where you live (for example in the EEA, the UK or California), you may have further rights under local law, including the right to complain to a data protection authority.
Children
Mr Trip Buddy is not directed at children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them. If you believe a child has created an account, email us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
When we change this policy, we update the date at the top of this page.
