Destroyed in a siege, it was rebuilt during the reign of Mariano II. Of the original structure, only the bases of the apse and bell tower remain, along with the Chapel of the Remedy, which houses some medieval sculptures. In 1733, the 13th-century Gothic Cathedral was demolished to make way for a Baroque one. The Chapel of the Archives dates back to the 17th-century reconstruction. The relics of Saint Archelaus are kept inside.
San Francesco
In neoclassical style, the current church is the work of the Cagliari architect Gaetano Cima in 1835
San Mauro Abate
Santo Spirito
The church is mentioned in some 16th-century documents, but only an archaeological investigation could reveal the exact origins of this building, which according to some hypotheses dates back to the Byzantine era.
Santa Lucia
Church in a neoclassical style.
Santa Chiara
The complex was built in 1343 by Judge Peter III of Arborea over a pre-existing church dedicated to Saint Vincent. It is a Franco-Gothic style building with a single nave and a square apse. It is one of the few remains of medieval art in Oristano.
Chiesa del Carmine
Designed by the architect Viana, it was built on commission from the Marquis of Arcais in the Baroque-Rococo style. It is one of the finest examples of Baroque and Rococo architecture in Oristano.
Beata Vergine Immacolata
The church and adjoining convent were erected in 1608 thanks to the generosity of the Oristano nobleman Domenico Paderi. The complex, built immediately outside the city walls, on the road leading to the church and convent of San Martino, has been home to the Capuchin friars since its inception.
San Martino
Mentioned in the will of Ugone II of 1335, it was presumably built in the 13th century and features the coats of arms of Aragon alongside the uprooted tree of Arborea, carved into one of the capitals.
Nostra Signora del Rimedio
Palazzo degli Scolopi
Palazzo Giudicale
The first sources that testify to its existence are found in the chronicles of the arrival in Oristano of the Archbishop of Pisa, Federico Visconti in 1263. This news is confirmed in the will of Judge Ugone II in 1335, which locates it on one side of Piazza Maioria, today's Piazza Manno.
Palazzo d'Arcais
The city walls of Oristano, which extended for 2 km along the current Mazzini, G. M. Anjoy, Solferino, Cagliari, Diego Contini streets and Rome Square (Piazza Roma), were reinforced by crenellated defensive towers at the gates and by 28 quadrilateral turrets.
San Cristoforo tower
Built in 1290, it was one of the five entrance gates of the ancient city walls. The tower is 19 meters tall and has three floors. At the top is a small crenellated tower with a bronze bell dating back to 1430. Guided tours are available every 30 minutes during opening hours. Its twin, the Torre di San Filippo or Port'a Mari, which was located in what is now Piazza Manno, was demolished in 1907, when, in a serious state of abandonment and dilapidation, it was deemed "of no artistic or cultural value" by the Ministry of Education.
It was created by the sculptor Ulisse Campi and the architect Mariano Falcini, and its inauguration took place on May 22, 1881.
It houses remains of the Gothic and Romanesque churches. The chapter house of the Baroque cathedral houses ancient vestments and silverware. It houses the largest collection of illuminated manuscripts in Sardinia, dating from the 13th to 15th centuries.
The Municipal Art Gallery hosts a permanent exhibition featuring some works from the Municipal Collection and several temporary exhibitions.
