Lake Natron is a shallow alkaline lake in the remote northern part of Tanzania, close to the border with Kenya. Surrounded by volcanic mountains, salt flats and semi-desert, it is best known as East Africa's principal breeding site for the lesser flamingo and as the base for climbing the active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai.

A vast alkaline lake surrounded by salt flats, volcanic mountains and the Rift Valley escarpment. Lesser flamingos feed and breed here when water and food conditions are suitable. The shoreline changes constantly, so the best viewing area may require a drive followed by a guided walk.
Oldoinyo Lengai; Mountain of God
An active 2,962-m volcano sacred to the Maasai and the only volcano known to have produced natrocarbonatite lava in historical times. Its steep, symmetrical cone dominates the southern lake basin.
Engaresero Hominin Footprint Site
More than 400 human footprints preserved in volcanic sediment, together with tracks left by other animals. The prints are approximately 5,000–19,000 years old and provide evidence of groups of people moving across the ancient landscape.
Walk with a Maasai guide across the outer lake flats to observe flamingos and the changing mineral landscape. The exact route depends on water levels and the location of the birds. Carry water, sun protection and closed footwear.
Engaresero Waterfalls
A guided walk through a narrow gorge to spring-fed waterfalls and natural pools. The route involves wading, wet rocks and slippery sections. Wear shoes that can get wet and carry waterproof protection for electronics.
A very steep, physically demanding overnight ascent on loose volcanic ash and rock. The climb gains more than 1,600 m and is suitable only for fit, experienced hikers. Conditions near the active crater can change, and reaching the summit is never guaranteed.
Ngare Sero Lake Natron Camp
An environmentally focused tented camp with suites, a dining and lounge area and natural spring-fed swimming pools. It arranges lake walks, waterfall hikes, archaeological visits, Maasai activities, long-distance treks and climbs of Ol Doinyo Lengai.
A large safari property offering air-conditioned bungalows, glamping tents and simpler safari tents with shared facilities. It has a restaurant, bar, swimming pool, Wi-Fi in the common areas and backup electricity. Activities and vehicle hire can be arranged.
Massai Giraffe Eco Lodge
A community-oriented eco-lodge and farm offering rooms, camping, a restaurant and filtered drinking-water refills. The lodge can help arrange local guides, lake visits and waterfall walks.
From Arusha
Both routes are scenic but rough. Carry water, fuel and a spare tyre, and do not rely solely on an online journey-time estimate.
From Serengeti National Park
Visitors can approach from the northern Serengeti through Klein's Gate and Loliondo.
By bus
Limited local buses operate from Arusha toward Loliondo and may stop at the Lake Natron junction or in Engaresero. Services leave early, are slow and may change without notice.
By air
Small charter aircraft may use local airstrips serving camps in the Lake Natron area. Flights and airstrip transfers must be arranged through a lodge or safari company in advance.
A 4×4 vehicle is needed for journeys between accommodation, the lakeshore, Ol Doinyo Lengai and more distant viewpoints. Tracks may be deeply corrugated, sandy, rocky or temporarily flooded.
