Oldoinyo Lengai; Mountain of God
An active 2,962-m volcano sacred to the Maasai and the only volcano known to have produced natrocarbonatite lava in historical times. Its steep, symmetrical cone dominates the southern lake basin.
Walk with a Maasai guide across the outer lake flats to observe flamingos and the changing mineral landscape. The exact route depends on water levels and the location of the birds. Carry water, sun protection and closed footwear.
A vast alkaline lake surrounded by salt flats, volcanic mountains and the Rift Valley escarpment. Lesser flamingos feed and breed here when water and food conditions are suitable. The shoreline changes constantly, so the best viewing area may require a drive followed by a guided walk.
