Gwacheon (과천) is a city in Gyeonggi, immediately south of Seoul. Its museums, zoo, amusement park and mountain trails make it a destination for day trips from the capital. Several attractions have "Seoul" in their names despite being in Gwacheon, including Seoul Grand Park, Seoul Land and LetsRun Park Seoul.

국립과천과학관
Indoor exhibitions introduce science, technology and natural history, with interactive displays and outdoor exhibits. A useful option for families or a rainy day. Check the museum website for programme bookings and any separate charges.
관악산
The mountain on Gwacheon's western side. Trails lead towards Yeonjuam and the rocky summit area at Yeonjudae. The route from Gwacheon Hyanggyo is one way to approach the mountain; see the hiking advice below.
연주대
A small cliffside Buddhist site near the Gwanaksan summit, with Nahanjeon Hall set among the rocks. It is a separate site from Yeonjuam, a short distance to the south. Take care on the rocky paths near the summit.
서울대공원
A large park complex at the foot of Cheonggyesan, with Seoul Zoo, a botanical garden, a theme garden and walking routes. The surrounding area also includes Seoul Land, MMCA Gwacheon and a campsite. Allow several hours for the zoo alone. The lakeside walking route is an alternative to the ticketed attractions.
국립현대미술관 과천; MMCA Gwacheon
Modern and contemporary art exhibitions and an outdoor sculpture garden. Nam June Paik's large video installation, The More, the Better (Dadaikseon), is here; check notices if you want to see it operating. A separate art bus connects MMCA Seoul and Gwacheon on selected weekdays; consult the latest route notice before using it.
과천향교
A Joseon-era Confucian school and shrine. The institution was founded in 1398 and moved to its present site in 1690. It can be combined with a walk towards Gwanaksan. Respect any ceremonies or restrictions on entering the buildings.
온온사
A historic guesthouse building associated with Gwacheon's Joseon-era local administration. Such guesthouses accommodated travelling officials and also had ceremonial functions. It offers a look at the city's history beyond its modern museums and parks.
서울랜드
An amusement park with rides and family attractions. Check the operating calendar before planning an evening visit, and check individual ride restrictions when travelling with children.
추사박물관
A museum about the calligrapher and scholar Kim Jeong-hui, known by his pen name Chusa, who spent his final years in Gwacheon. It is away from the Grand Park cluster; plan the journey separately.
서울대공원 둘레길
The park has a lakeside route of about 2.8 km, a zoo-perimeter route of about 4.5 km and a forest-bathing route of about 7 km. These are separate routes with different starting points. Check the park map and notices for access and closures; do not confuse the forest route with a short walk around the lake.
렛츠런파크 서울
Gwacheon's racecourse, operated by the Korea Racing Authority. Telephone within South Korea: 1566-3333. Consult the calendar for race days and public events rather than assuming racing or tours are available every day.
관문체육공원
A park with green space and sports facilities, suitable for a walk or a break from sightseeing.
과천시민회관
A venue for theatre, musicals and concerts, with sports facilities including an ice rink. Check the relevant programme and public-session arrangements before visiting.
문원체육공원
A neighbourhood sports park with a football pitch, basketball and tennis courts, gateball courts, an inline-skating area and a floor fountain. Check availability and booking requirements before planning to use a court or pitch. The map marker points to the football pitch within the park.
Serves sujebi (hand-torn noodle soup), cold soybean noodles and kimchi pancakes. The menu is short, so this is an option for visitors looking for one of those dishes near the town centre.
It is a restaurant that many local people visit to eat sundaeguk.
Serves malatang (spicy soup) and guobaorou, a sweet-and-sour fried pork dish.
Serves chueotang, a Korean loach soup. The restaurant is near Government Complex Gwacheon Station.
Cake restaurant where people line up early in the morning
It is a convenient place to have a gathering due to large space.
A cafe with a large seating area, serving bread and desserts.
A pie shop offering takeaway pies and gift packaging.
서울대공원 캠핑장
A seasonal camping option requiring an online reservation. The official park page links to the campsite booking service. Check equipment arrangements and seasonal opening dates before booking; this is a campsite rather than a hotel.
By car
Follow the signs for the individual attraction rather than simply for Gwacheon. Seoul Grand Park, MMCA Gwacheon and Seoul Land have different parking arrangements.
Within Seoul Grand Park
The paid Elephant Train links the park's information centre with stops serving the zoo, MMCA Gwacheon and Seoul Land. The zoo stop also serves the art museum, with a further short walk.
By taxi
A taxi can help with destinations away from the subway, such as Chusa Museum. Show the Korean name and address to the driver.
