Hikkaduwa is a beach town on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka, between the villages Thotagamuwa and Thiranagama. 20 km south you find the city of Galle. A small part of the beach is a Marine National Park, Hikkaduwa National Park.

Tsunami Honganji Viharay
A 30-m-high statue commemorating the victims of the largest rail disaster in history (1,000 to 1,700 deaths by 2004 tsunami). Donated by Japan, it is a replica of the 6th-century Buddhas of Bamiyan (destroyed by the Taliban in Afghanistan).
Very graphic photos of the aftermath of the devastating tsunami waves.
Marine park. Lots of colorful fish and odd turtle, small reef shark and moray eel. Coral reef badly damaged but kind of recovering. Beach in front of Beer Garden is excellent access point. This national park is a protected sanctuary. Do not touch the corals under any circumstances. Since 2025, authorities have strictly enforced fines; one individual was arrested, and prosecuted for damaging the reef.
Very popular place to surf, many different spots, for beginners to expert surfers. Hosted first national surfing competition. Venue for international events (like the Asian Surfing Championships). Good places for beginners to lear or rent a board: see several small surfers beach huts just in front of Sea Salt Society. 1-hr board rental $3 plus $12 for 1-hr lesson.
See lots of fish, small reef sharks just off the beach in marine park. It is roped off with bouys into two halves. One half contains soft sand only, ideal for safe swimming, the other contains rocks and coral, better suited for experienced snorkellers. Boats cannot enter either and lots of fish can be been in both halves. Coral restoration work is on going, mostly in the area beyond the ropes and up to the reef protecting coral wall.
Five turtle species are hatched here: Olive Ridley Turtle, Leatherback Turtle, Loggerhead Turtle, Hawksbill Turtle, and Green Turtle.
Feeding turtles is not allowed anymore, and strictly prohibited; offenders face heavy fines and potential imprisonment.
A great place to meet other travellers over meals, drinks and card games. The staff are really friendly and helpful. They also run a hostel with private rooms and dorms and rent bicycles. Free drinking water refills.
Surfing themed and very popular among tourists and rightly so, on the main strip, but away from the noise of traffic. Quieter towards closing time. Try the "Prawn Taco", and a "Peanut Butter Nutella Milkshake" for dessert. Staff is a mix of locals and foreigners. They also serve great coffee. Their various breakfasts are excellent.
Biggest supermarket in town. Lower floor all for food. Upper floor has kitchen wear, kids toys etc.
Weekly morning market. Good for buying fresh produce and other general household items.
By plane
The nearest airport is north of Colombo. A taxi or driver from Colombo can cost Rs 7,000-12,000, and can be arranged through your accommodation or various other tour companies.
By bus
Buses run frequently from Galle and further south east along the coast. The bus arrives at the bus station in Hikkaduwa, but also drops passengers along the road, at bus stops.
By rail
Hikkaduwa is on the Coastal or Southern Rail Line (connecting Colombo through to Matara).
The beach side main road is flat but gets a bit hilly going inland so a bicycle is a good way to get around if you can find one. Otherwise just walk or there are plenty of tuk tuks around.
