History buffs may heard of the notorious "Seobinggo hotel" used by Chun Doo-hwan's Defense Security Command, but dissidents were more likely to be sent to anti-communist branches like Namyeong-dong before South Korea became a democracy. The branch, which functioned as an interrogation and torture chamber, was built in 1977. This is where university student Bak Jong-cheol was tortured to death, which led to massive pro-democracy movements and forced Chun to agree the direct election of president. The site has been renovated by the police as a museum to commemorate the victims of the authoritarian regime's oppression.
