Surisa Temple was founded in the southwest region of Mount Surisan during the reign of King Jinheun (539-575 AD) of the Silla Dynasty. The temple is part of the Yongjusa Temple, which is the regional headquarters for the Jogyejong branch of Buddhism. The founder of the temple is unknown. The Buddhist monk Unsadaesa named the temple, which means 'one will see the Buddha in person and become a Buddha himself in the future'. The temple burned down during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592 and during the Korean War, then was rebuilt by Chungwoon in 1955. On October 25, 1988, it was designated the 86th Traditional Temple.
