San Luis Church
San Luis's main Roman Catholic church, built during the Spanish era in a mix of Baroque and Renaissance styles. The turreted and unplastered brick façade itself is unlike the typical flat church exterior found elsewhere.
Placed on a road junction next to the municipal park, it is memorial depicting a sculpture of a peasant family. It is dedicated to the town's most famous resident, Luis Taruc, a peasant leader who founded the Hukbalahap, the country's largest guerrilla organization fighting against the Japanese in World War II, and then the Philippine government when it reneged on its promises to grant land reform after independence in 1946. Taruc surrendered in 1954, but dissenters within the movement regrouped themselves into the New People's Army in 1968, continuing one of the world's longest leftwing insurgencies. Taruc himself was imprisoned but was eventually amnestied and rehabilitated before dying in 2005 aged 92. Taruc's ashes are interred at the base of the monument.
A monument built in 2023 at the entrance of a private cemetery to honor the Hukbalahap (an abbreviation of Hukbong Bayan Laban sa Hapon; translated as People's Anti-Japanese Army) movement founded by Luis Taruc, who was born in what was then the rural village of Santa Monica in 1913. It features concrete statues depicting Taruc and two of his comrades in the Huk movement. Its construction, along with that of Taruc's solo monument in the downtown, marks the rehabilitation of the Huks as agrarian nationalist heroes after being vilified for decades as communist bogeymen in the political paranoia caused by the Cold War.
A recreational space built over the remaining span of the old bridge over the Pampanga River connecting downtown San Luis with its rural barangays.
San Luis is bypassed by the major highways of Pampanga. From Manila, take the San Fernando exit along the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) leading to the Gapan-Olongapo Road, also known as Jose Abad Santos Avenue (JASA).
