Every February Tokamachi hosts a spectacular snow festival. It has a longer history than any other snow festival in Japan and is second in size only to one held in Hokkaido. The large amount of snowfall creates a picturesque winterland. The large snow sculptures are magnificent and well worth the trip to behold. Tokamachi averages near three meters of snow a year.
清津峡, Kiyotsukyō
Kiyotsu Gorge is a spectacular gorge known for its steep cliffs of columnar rock formations and the clear waters of the Kiyotsu River. A 750-metre-long pedestrian tunnel provides several viewing points, culminating in the Panorama Station, where a reflective pool creates striking views of the gorge. The tunnel's artistic design makes it a popular destination for photographers, especially during autumn foliage.
