Main part of the exposed ruins, including the remnants of the Palace, various other buildings of the royal court, the Royal Basilica, and the restored southern gate of the Inner City with a fragment of the walls.
An ornate Orthodox church built between 1897 and 1927, as a part of a modern monastery built over the ruins to commemorate the medieval capital. It was nationalised by the Communist regime in the 1940s, and never returned to the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, so it's inactive (and locked up). The church stands closely to the ruins of the inner city wall, and you can appreciate the wall's dimensions by the sections that fell down in a single piece.
Colourful old Orthodox town church. Built 1908-1931, frescoes finished 1951. It's claimed that this is the church with the most depictions of Bulgarian saints and martyrs, over 60. Feast day is 8th of November.
