Egypt holds thousands of years of history along the Nile. But its desert climate can turn a dream trip into an exhausting one if you pick the wrong season. The best time to visit Egypt balances comfortable temperatures for open-air temples against peak crowds and higher cruise fares.

Official archaeological visitor data from the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities show that tourist numbers surge between October and April. In these cooler months, Cairo averages 20°C to 26°C (68°F to 79°F) by day, and Upper Egypt (Luxor and Aswan) stays pleasant for exploring tombs.

In contrast, summer brings scorching heat. Between June and August, southern temperatures regularly exceed 42°C (108°F), turning unshaded stone courtyards into furnaces.

Interest in summer 2027 is soaring, though, because of the total solar eclipse on 2 August 2027. Luxor will see over six minutes of totality.

Winter (November to February) is the best time for sightseeing

Winter is the best time for the ruins, the pyramids and a slow cruise between Luxor and Aswan.

December and January: Peak comfort and high demand

In Cairo and Giza, winter afternoons are crisp and pleasant, with highs around 20°C (68°F). Walking through the desert sand around the Pyramids of Giza or touring the newly opened Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is comfortable without dripping sweat. In Luxor, mornings start brisk at around 9°C (48°F), making early morning hot air balloon rides over the Valley of the Kings chilly—so you'll want a fleece jacket and scarf.

Because winter delivers such pleasant weather, crowds peak too: five-star Nile cruise ships sell out months ahead, and the queues at King Tutankhamun's tomb can be long. If you're traveling over Christmas or New Year, book your EgyptAir flights and your hotels at least four months ahead, because the best Nile cruise cabins go first.

November and February: Ideal temperatures and cultural events

November and February are often considered superior to December and January. You'll enjoy the same comfortable 25°C (77°F) daytime temperatures, but with slightly smaller crowd volumes outside major holidays.

On 22 February, the Sun Festival of Abu Simbel takes place. Twice a year, the rising sun shines 60 meters into the inner sanctuary, lighting up the statues of Ramses II, Ra-Horakhty and Amun-Ra. People fly in just to see it.

Spring (March to April) brings shoulder prices and desert winds

Spring brings longer daylight hours and warming temperatures, making it a great shoulder season if you plan carefully.

March: Warm days and temple exploration

March brings daytime highs of 24°C (75°F) in Cairo and 30°C (86°F) in Luxor. It's warm enough for sunbathing on a Nile cruise deck, but cool enough for exploring the temples of Karnak, Kom Ombo, and Edfu during the afternoon.

Spring brings the khamsin, a dry, dusty wind from the Sahara. It can cause sandstorms and cut visibility for 24 to 48 hours. When a khamsin strikes, outdoor pyramid visits become uncomfortable, making it smart to pivot to indoor museums.

April: The rise of Red Sea diving

By April, temperatures in Upper Egypt begin touching 35°C (95°F). Travelers often combine a quick historical tour with a beach retreat along the Red Sea coast in Hurghada or Sharm el-Sheikh. Sea temperatures warm up to 24°C (75°F), creating superb visibility for snorkeling and diving across coral reefs.

Summer (May to September): scorching heat and big hotel savings

Summer in Egypt is brutally hot. Summer is hard going for temples and open-air ruins. Go only if you can sightsee at dawn and dusk.

Surviving the summer heat

In Luxor and Aswan, daily temperatures routinely surge past 42°C (108°F) between June and August. The sandstone pylons and dirt paths absorb intense heat and radiate it back, making midday touring exhausting.

To survive a summer visit:

  1. Sightsee at dawn: Start your temple visits when sites open at 6:00 AM, and finish before 10:30 AM.
  2. Rest during the midday heat: Spend afternoons resting inside air-conditioned hotel rooms, visiting modern air-conditioned museums, or lounging under shaded cruise boat awnings.
  3. Save substantially: Five-star heritage hotels like the Sofitel Legend Old Cataract in Aswan or Winter Palace in Luxor drop their rates by 40% to 60% compared to winter peaks.

Special alert: The 2027 total solar eclipse

A massive exception to the usual summer slowdown occurs in August 2027. On 2 August 2027, a total solar eclipse will pass directly over Luxor, providing an astounding six minutes and 23 seconds of totality under cloudless desert skies.

Eclipse chasers are already booking Nile cruises and Luxor hotels. For full tracking, reading maps, and booking strategies, review our dedicated total solar eclipse travel guide.

Autumn (October to November): the heat eases

October marks the long-awaited break from the fierce summer heat. While early October can still feel warm with highs near 34°C (93°F) in Upper Egypt, evenings turn pleasantly breezy.

By late October and November, conditions are near perfect. High-water levels on the Nile ensure smooth sailing for cruise boats and traditional wooden feluccas. The Red Sea maintains water temperatures around 27°C (81°F), providing comfortable diving conditions before winter cools the water.

Practical tips for planning your Egypt trip

  • Purchase tickets online: As of October 2026, the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities has made ticketing completely cashless across major sites. Buy your monument entry tickets in advance via the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities portal.
  • Apply for an official e-Visa: Eligible travelers from over 75 countries should secure a single-entry ($25) or multiple-entry ($60) electronic visa through the official e-Visa website. Don't use third-party scam agencies. Check eligibility with our visa checker tool.
  • Stay connected: Acquire a dependable travel eSIM to track Uber rides in Cairo, check digital ticket QR codes, and run navigation apps.
  • Dress respectfully: When visiting mosques or local markets, dress conservatively with shoulders and knees covered. Light, loose linen trousers and breathable cotton shirts work best for sun protection.
