Mount Cameroon (also known as Fako) is an active volcano and at an elevation of 4040 m is the highest peak in Cameroon. It is a popular climb that does not require any special equipment.
UnderstandMount Cameroon is the most active volcano in West Africa, having last spewed lava in 2012. The trail rises through farmland, then forest, and then a barren volcanic landscape once you break the tree line.
PrepareThe best time to climb Mount Cameroon is from December to early March, during the dry season. Cameroon may be tropical, but it is chilly at the top of the mountain.
Get inThe closest international airport is in Douala. From there it is a 70 km drive along sealed roads to Buea.
ClimbThe most popular route is the "Guinness Trail", which begins near Buea. It is a 12.7 km hike to the top. There are several huts along the route. For a two-day climb, you will sleep in hut #2 at an altitude of 9500 ft.
Stay safeWhile it isn't a technical climb, it can be tricky. Some footholds are quite tenuous and the terrain jagged and often slippery. Be sure to bring quality footwear!
