Macedonian phrasebook

Macedonian (македонски) is the main language of North Macedonia situated between Serbia, Greece and Albania in Southeastern Europe. The language is very similar to Bulgarian, and the differences between them are often blurry in the spoken language. However, despite the use of the Cyrillic script in both languages, a particular difference is in the written form: Macedonian orthography more closely follows the Serbian Cyrillic conventions, and has some letters lacked by Bulgarian Cyrillic and vice versa.

Most Macedonians will understand Bulgarian without the need of a translator. Serbian/Croatian/Bosnian/Montenegrin is also similar, though the grammar is somewhat different – Macedonian and Bulgarian mostly don't have cases while Serbo-Croatian does. Two other languages widely spoken in North Macedonia are Albanian and, to some extent, Turkish. There are also Macedonian language speakers among the Slavic Macedonian minority in northern Greece that is not recognized by the Greek national authorities.

The Macedonian language is an easy language for mastering the basics as each letter contains its own sound with no letter change. The vowels are similar to the Spanish vowels and give out the same sounds at all times.

Pronunciation guideMacedonian has 31 sounds. Spelling does not present any difficulties as there is one symbol for each sound. Pronunciation of the Cyrillic and Latin alphabets will be given here.
