UnderstandThe first of its kind in Nepal, the Indigenous Peoples Trail offers unique, living exposure to one of the most culturally diverse areas of Nepal.
EatAll food and services are locally produced, virtually all of the money stays in the community.
DrinkThough there are small shops, where one can buy snacks and drinks, in most of the villages along the way, none of those sell water. So be prepared to boil water at the homestays.
SleepThe Indigenous Peoples Trail allows you to stay overnight in private homes in traditional villages far from commercialised tourist trails.
Get inThe starting point of the Indigenous Peoples Trail is Dhunge via Mude, a 3-hr drive from Dhulikhel or 4½ hr from Kathmandu. Get off the bus in Dhunghe and begin the short climb towards Thulo Sailung.
WalkThulo Sailung. Rise early to reach the summit of Thulo Sailung as the sun rises over the Eastern Himalaya.
Stay safeAs the trail keeps below 3000 m, acclimatising is not that hard. Still, some 20% of people will experience altitude sickness already at 2,500 m, if they sleep there without acclimatising.
Go nextThe final stretch of the trail crosses over the Sun Koshi and shortly ends at Nepalthok where your bus or jeep will be waiting.
