Being on a beach is an essential part of a vacation for many. Types of beaches and practices vary, as do the activities visitors come there for — mostly for swimming, relaxation, or water sports.
UnderstandA beach is an area of loose sloping material (sand, rocks, gravel or pebbles) between the land and either the sea or a freshwater lake or river.
Seasonal travelMost beaches have a peak tourist period when large crowds come to vacation in the sun and sand. In more northern climates, this is typically the summer months of June through August.
Get inAs most people come to the beaches, they are usually not too difficult to travel to.
Fees and permitsSome beaches charge a fee.

WorkMany people enjoy working as lifeguards.
BuyPopular beaches attract salespersons of all kinds, but be careful as their merchandise may often be of sub-par quality or overpriced.
EatSome beaches have cafés or stalls selling food either on the beach or very close to it. In other cases you will have to bring everything with you, from shops a long distance away.
DrinkIt is important to make sure you have a sufficient water supply, whether that means using water fountains that are in some cases provided near the beach or bringing your own drinks.
SleepMany beaches have accommodation nearby – hotels, hostels, campsites, cabins, or beach houses.
Stay safeIf you're caught in a rip current, also called a rip tide, you may find yourself being pulled away from the shore surprisingly quickly.
Stay healthyOn many beaches, there are showers where you can clean off the salt (for seaside beaches) or possible unhealthy substances, such as cyanobacteria. If not, you may want to consider taking a shower elsewhere.
RespectThere are nude or naturist beaches, beaches where toplessness is common and beaches with stricter requirements — some of them much stricter, such as if you go to the beach in Iran.
