Outdoor cooking is part of outdoor life, such as camping, hiking or cruising on small craft. There are many types of portable stoves, presenting travellers with options for weight, fuel availability and ease of cooking. You can also cook directly over an open fire. Many camping sites provide fixed cooking structures for your enjoyment.

Fuel typese. cut or pressed together), are available almost globally.g. when on a boat or in remote, barren areas such as a desert). There may also be environmental issues burning wood in areas threatened with deforestation.
TalkThe same fuel may have different names in different countries. Not only do American and British English differ, but trademarks and other secondary names are often used.
Get inAs fuels are flammable, taking them on planes, boats, trains and buses is often restricted. You may need to source all your fuel locally, thus bringing a stove that works with locally-prevalent fuels is a huge benefit.g.
BuyThe fuel types typically used differ from region to region, and similar products available for other uses may be less suitable for portable stoves because of additives.
EatThe light portable stoves are best suited for soups and stews. You have no oven (although you can construct substitutes) and the frying pan is not as good as at home.
Stay safeFuel leaks can cause unconsciousness and death. Check connectors and tubes, always turn the off switches, keep the containers out of sleeping areas and make sure the ventilation is good.
RespectHave a way to take litter and food scraps with you and dispose of them responsibly. Disposable grills are a special problem, as it takes considerable time for them to cool enough for transport in your luggage.
CopeFor a stove with parts that can break: if you are away from civilisation, or your stove is of an unusual type, bring tools and parts to repair it in case you need them.
