East Timorese exclave and municipality

Oecussi (Oecusse, Oé-Cusse) is the western exclave of East Timor. If you already have the feeling that in Timor-Leste is one of the most remote places in the world, Oecussi may feel more like the edge of the world. Still, this beautiful region of Earth is filled with mountains, beaches and lots of nature. Oecussi was the first capital of the Portuguese in Timor, and here the topasses had their centre of power.

Hotel and homestay in Mahata, 5 minute walk from the port. Lovely host, able to give a lot of advice about the local area, will pick you up and drop you off from the airport. Her kids can also guide you around some of the hiking spots. Good food ($7-10/meal) and one of the few restaurants in the area. Book via WhatsApp.

This girls’ boarding located opposite the Oecusse Governor’s office, also has a few basic rooms for accommodation. A/C, kitchens (some). Beautiful gardens.
By land
From Oe-Cusse Ambeno, there are border crossings to West Timor at Bobometo (Oesilo administrative post), Sacato (Pante Macassar administrative post), and Passabe (Passabe administrative post).
By plane
The Aeroporto Internacional de Oe-Cusse Rota do Sândalo is between Lifau and Pante Macassar.com for information. As of mid-2026, Aero Dili does not fly this route anymore.
Either you have brought your own (rental) car, motorbike or mountain bike, or you have to rely on public transport with Bemos. The journey between Pante Macassar and Bobometo, for example, takes an hour.
