Fukiware Falls is a broad, 7-m-high waterfall where the Katashina River plunges into a narrow fissure in the rock, creating the impression of a giant split in the riverbed. Often called the “Niagara of Japan”, the falls were formed by erosion of soft volcanic rock and stretch approximately 30 m across. Walking trails follow the river through a forested gorge, with several viewing points overlooking the falls and nearby formations, including Byōbu-iwa, a wall of columnar rock. The scenery is particularly attractive during autumn foliage season. The falls are about 40 minutes by bus from Numata Station, although services are limited; the riverside paths may close in winter or when conditions are unsafe.
Take the JR Joetsu Line, from Takasaki. By car it can be accessed via Kanetsu express way or Route 17.
