The main social and economic hub for the Batammariba people. Once a week, locals from scattered mountain valley settlements gather to trade fresh sorghum, hand-carved pipes, traditional pottery, and specialized headpieces decorated with cowrie shells and antelope horns.
A highly photogenic, beautifully preserved cluster of multi-tiered mud tower houses. Local guides are available here to walk travelers through the interior chambers, explaining the spiritual significance of the ancestral phallic mud shrines built near the doorways.
By car
Koutammakou is typically accessed from the city of Kara (the regional administrative capital located roughly 100 km southwest) or from the nearby transport hub town of Kandé.
By public transport
Shared bush taxis (sept-places) operate daily from motor parks in Kara to Kandé.
Because the traditional mud fortresses are scattered loosely across farmland, forests, and valleys rather than packed into dense urban blocks, walking on foot along marked village trails is mandatory.
