Jammu and Kashmir (J&K, Kashmiri: جۆم تہٕ کٔشیٖر Jom tụ Kạśīr; Dogri and Hindi: जम्मु और कश्मीर Jammu aur Kaśmīr, Urdu: جموں و کشمیر Jammū va Kaśmīr) is a union territory in northern India. It is primarily in the Himalayan mountains, an area of great beauty and diversity offering much in the way of outdoor activities and spectacular sights for the tourist. It is a part of the larger disputed territory of Kashmir, and is separated from Pakistani-administered parts of Kashmir, Azad Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan by the line of control (LOC). Ladakh, separated out in 2019, lies to the east.
Known for its temples, shrines, palaces and forts.
Some say it is the Paradise on Earth, friendly people, beautiful gardens, vast lakes and pristine streams and stunning landscapes.
By train
Jammu & Kashmir can only be reached by train from other states through Jammu Tawi and Katra, which is well connected to many large Indian cities. Several long‑distance trains operate daily.
By car
Reaching Jammu & Kashmir by car is a popular option for travellers who enjoy scenic drives and flexibility.
By bus
A mix of government and private bus operators serve Jammu & Kashmir, offering routes from major North Indian cities as well as services within the region.
By terrain vehicle
Terrain vehicles such as 4×4 SUVs are widely used in Jammu & Kashmir, especially in areas where regular cars or buses may struggle.
By train
The rail travel in Jammu and Kashmir is a tourism by itself.
