Guanajuato is a state in the Bajío region of Mexico. It is a region of varied terrains including mountainous areas in the east, the Bajio in the south, and an area that is part of Mexico's central plains (altiplano). The state has numerous rivers and lakes and volcanoes that are part of Mexico's volcano belt. The colonial era mining cities are among the most scenic in Mexico.
Guanajuato's highways directly connect to three of Mexico's ten major highways (Mexico City-Nuevo Laredo, Querétaro-Ciudad Juárez and Manzanillo-Tampico). Long distance buses from multiple companies serve Guanajuato.
