Most visitors to Greece want their trip to include, or even to be devoted to, the islands, but may initially be bewildered by their number and variety. In order to sort out these islands' diverse attractions, here is a high-level overview of them; the characteristics of each group will be summarized on their regional pages with further descriptions on the links to the individual islands. Also below there are some suggestions which may be helpful for travelers in getting an idea of which islands they may find most appealing.
The Saronic Gulf Islands lie in the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea southwest of Athens. They are a short ferry ride from Piraeus and are popular for day-trips; some, like Hydra, are also visited by cruise ships.
The Cyclades are a group of Greek Islands, located in the southern part of the Aegean Sea (south of Athens and north of Crete). The archipelago contains some 2,200 islands, islets and rocks; but only 33 islands are inhabited.
The Dodecanese Islands are an island group in the South Aegean Islands of Greece .
For the Sydney suburb, see Sydney/Sydney Olympic Park Rhodes (Greek: Ρόδος, Ródos) is one of the largest and most fertile of the Greek Islands, and is one of the most visited because of its combination of beaches, archaeological sites, and extensive medieval town. The climate is particularly good, with the weather typically sunny and mild.
The Sporades Islands (Greek: Βόρειες Σποράδες) have a quite different atmosphere from the travel-poster Greece of the Cyclades islands: instead of bare rugged hills topped with dazzling cubistic villages, the Sporades are fertile and heavily wooded, with pine-forested mountains sloping down to some of the best beaches in the Aegean, and the local architecture is more characteristic of Northern Greece, with less whitewashing and more stone roofs. Skiathos is the best known and easiest to get to – accordingly it is the most crowded, with throngs of visitors arriving all summer.
The designation East Aegean Islands covers the easternmost Greek Islands of the Aegean Sea. The Eastern Aegean islands group is, like the Dodecanese, much closer to Turkey than to the Greek mainland.
The North Aegean Islands are in Greece. These islands are places of mountain villages, fishing harbours, beaches, some ancient ruins, and some natural wonders.
The Ionian Islands refers to the chain of Greek Islands stretching along the west coast of Greece in the Ionian Sea. Due to historical facts the isolated islands of Kithira and Antikythera, south of the Peloponnese, are here included in this group.
Ferries will take you to every island, though routes and frequencies vary depending on time of year.
