Association football in Europe

Europe is obsessed by football - soccer - year-round. Bars show matches, huge arenas host games, an army of travelling supporters throng railway stations and motorway service areas, children scuff balls in parks and streets, overweight adults play badly in pub teams then go home and scream at games on TV - "My grandmother could have scored from there!". Football is a global game, but two aspects set Europe apart. First is the dominance of its leading clubs, which buy up talent from the rest of the world, often with money they don't have. Second is its strength in depth, so even lower-tier clubs have strong local following.

This means that the term "football" in Europe always refers to soccer, even in countries with a strong rugby scene.

UnderstandFootball in Europe is nominally a winter game, but in reality there’s only a one week lull at the end of July. Club warm-up games start in August then the regular season runs until mid-May.
Leading countriesThe list of leading European football countries will never be agreed - nor should it be.
SummerSome European countries have such harsh winters that playing or travelling as a supporter is unrealistic.
Other nations
Stay safeTop tier professional games are mass spectator events so they carry a risk of pickpocketing, crowd collapse / stampede, and violence.
