“Great Fountain”
The Trani Vrysi dates to 1724 and is shaded by towering plane trees. This elegant stone fountain was once the village’s primary water source and remains a focal point of local life.
One of Greece’s most striking and isolated ancient temples, set high in the mountains. Built in the 5th century BC and attributed to Ictinus, it blends Doric, Ionic, and the earliest known Corinthian column.
also known as the Kapeli forest
The Foloi Oak Forest is a rare and extensive oak woodland in the northwest Peloponnese, spreading across a gentle plateau. Its centuries-old trees create a shaded, almost mythical landscape often linked to the legends of the centaurs. It’s an easy and peaceful place for short walks among nature.
A scenic gorge on the border of Elis and Messenia, the Neda River flows through a lush canyon with small waterfalls and natural pools. A popular hiking route follows the river, involving footbridges and occasional wading. Allow a few hours and wear suitable footwear.
A remote mountain on the Arcadia–Elis border, Mount Lykaion was an important sanctuary of Zeus in antiquity. The summit area preserves an ash altar and the remains of an ancient stadium. Today it offers sweeping views and can be reached by road, with short walks to the main sites.
The atmospheric ruins of the Frankish-era Isova Monastery lie in a quiet valley near the Alfeios River. Founded in the 13th century, the complex includes the remains of a Western Gothic-style abbey church (Notre Dame) and the later church of St Nicholas. Though partly ruined, the site offers a rare glimpse of medieval Western monastic architecture in Greece.
Andritsaina is best reached by car. It lies 1.5–2 hours from Kalamata or Pyrgos, via winding but scenic mountain roads.
