On the east side of the island, Mount Yasur is probably Tanna's main attraction. Yasur is an active volcano - it erupts every few minutes. The government releases a rating system from 0 (normal) to 5 (Very large eruption) so you can be safer. There are also some interesting rock formations on the north side of the volcano. Protect yourself (breathing mask, protection glasses) and your camera (rain sleeve, filter) as the summit is very windy and any exposed part of your body will be covered in dust ashes. The volcano is little over 1,000 feet in height. Some locals believe that the volcano is sacred.
Mount Yasur is an active volcano on Tanna Island, Vanuatu, 361 m (1,184 ft) high above sea level, on the coast near Sulphur Bay, northeast of the taller Mount Tukosmera, which was active in the Pleistocene. It has a largely unvegetated pyroclastic cone with a nearly circular summit crater 400 m in diameter.
