South Haven is unique among Lake Michigan beach towns in that the downtown is right next to the beaches and the harbor. It's OK to walk straight from the beach in swimwear to the downtown, although you may want to cover up a bit.

Nice displays of Lake Michigan maritime history, the old wooden lifeboats are very beautiful and make you wonder how many storms they survived.
Keep your eyes peeled for the pirate ship, matey! Ask about a tour, they generally will let you tour the boat if they are not getting ready for their next trip.
