Cattaraugus Reforestation Area #9
1,149 acres (465 ha) of conifer forest (mostly pine, larch and spruce) crisscrossed with a network of trails that also extends into neighboring South Valley State Forest, which are open year-round for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and snowmobiling. Pine Hill State Forest is also open to hunters and trappers, and fishing is available on two small ponds in the eastern part of the forest.
18-hole, par-72 golf course founded in 1927, with rolling hills and scenic mountain vistas that make for a tough yet enjoyable outing. An onsite bar and restaurant provides a casual atmosphere for golfers who find themselves hungry after their game, and there's also a pro shop for the convenience of those who want to stock up on essentials like extra tees or balls.
There's no shortage of kitschy country diners around these parts, but R&M really takes that aesthetic to another level: if you're lucky, they'll seat you in the authentic Amish buggy right in the middle of the dining room, fitted with a booth and chairs inside! There's a selection of Amish-made crafts for sale, too. Food-wise, it's classic downhome American cuisine through and through. Service is slow, but usually friendly.
If you just need to pick up a few simple things and/or you're too cheap to shop at Tops, here's another option.
A full-service supermarket.
Backcountry campsites are offered here free on a first-come, first-served basis — check the events schedule, because you may be out of luck if you come during one of the occasional horseback-riding events that the forest occasionally attracts. Leave-no-trace principles apply.
Pet-friendly campground with 150 electrified sites for tents and RVs, 6 cabins, and a whole host of amenities: a playground, volleyball and basketball courts, a game room, a camp store with firewood and supplies, a heated outdoor swimming pool (open Memorial Day through Labor Day), onsite hiking trails, even free WiFi. Open May 1 through October 15.
Small-town historic charm abounds: the Inn at One Bank Street is a tiny little 4-room hotel in the middle of downtown Randolph, situated in a former fire hall that's been restored meticulously. Two standard guest rooms and two suites boast individual decorative themes and various amenities: standard rooms contain a queen- or king-size bed with TV, coffee maker, alarm clock, iron and ironing board, hair dryer, and a chair and work space; the first-floor king-bed suite contains all of the above plus an additional TV, a sofa that converts to an additional queen-size bed, and kitchenette with sink, mini-fridge, microwave, and cupboards stocked with plates, glasses, and silverware. The kitchenette in the second-floor luxury suite upgrades the mini-fridge to a full-size one and adds a stove, pots and pans, and a four-seat dining room table, plus there's a whirlpool tub in the bathroom and a padded reclining chair to go with the futon and bed. Free WiFi is available all over the property, and pets are welcome.
