In 1910, the Lakeview Number One oil well suffered a blowout and oil began to gush from the well. It took 6 months to get the gusher under control during which time over 9 million barrels of oil leaked from the well, the largest oil spill in history. Today, the footings of the well and the oil soaked soil can be seen and the site is marked with a historical plaque and comprehensive information board.
The Lakeview Gusher was an eruption of hydrocarbons from a pressurized oil well in the Midway-Sunset Oil Field in Kern County, California, in 1910. Caused by a blowout, it created the largest accidental oil spill in history, lasting 18 months and releasing an estimated 9 million barrels of crude oil.
