Under heavy protest, residents Carl and Carolyn Haffenreffer actually purchased the lighthouse from the town in 1961. It has since changed hands a few times, but was finally reactivated in 1997. It has been a landmark and frequent tourist attraction for much of its life, and continues to function as such.
