The Tehachapi Loop is a favorite of railroad fans around the world. It is one of the few places where a train can be seen passing over itself. The loop is an engineering feat that lowered the grade required for the railroad to climb over the pass between the High Desert and the Central Valley. A number of historical markers can be found overlooking the loop.
The Tehachapi Loop is a 3,779-foot-long rail spiral on the Union Pacific Railroad's Mojave Subdivision through the Tehachapi Pass in the Tehachapi Mountains in Kern County, south-central California. The line connects Bakersfield and the San Joaquin Valley to the town of Mojave in the Mojave Desert.
