Smith was president of the New York Anti-Slavery Society (1836-1839) and a "station master" on the Underground Railroad in the 1840s and 1850s. The sprawling estate where he lived throughout his life is now a museum complex with interior and exterior exhibits on freedom seekers, Gerrit Smith's wealth, philanthropy and family, and the Underground Railroad.
