Remarkably, it's just an Anglican parish church, though one that counts St Thomas Beckett among its provosts. There was a church and monastery here from the early 8th century, a pilgrimage site associated with its founder St John Bishop of York. The present soaring structure was built piecemeal from the 12th to the 14th century in Gothic then Perpendicular style.
