Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve is a vast and lightly visited protected area in Northern Uganda, between the Mount Elgon highlands and the plains of Karamoja. Its wooded savannas, seasonal wetlands, rocky outcrops and mountain backdrop support giraffes, zebras, elands, cheetahs and Uganda's last surviving population of roan antelope.

Broad wooded savannas framed by Mount Kadam and scattered rocky hills. Look for giraffes, zebras, elands, hartebeests, roan antelopes, ostriches and dry-country birds. Wildlife is dispersed, so sightings require patience and an experienced guide.
Mount Debasien
The reserve's highest mountain, rising to approximately 3,068 m. Its ridges and cliffs dominate views across the eastern plains. Longer walks or ascents require advance planning, a local guide and permission from UWA.
Nakadet Cave
A rocky shelter associated with the history and traditions of Karamoja communities. Paintings and markings have been reported on its walls, while the elevated setting provides broad views over the surrounding plains. Treat it as a cultural site: do not touch the paintings, light fires against the walls or remove stones.
A small hosted property built into a natural rocky setting, with three rooms, full-board meals, solar electricity, hot water and guided drives and walks. A 4×4 is required, and the property asks for reservations at least seven days ahead. Entrance fees, transfers and optional activities are generally separate.
A small safari camp with six en-suite tents, private wooden decks, a dining area and lounge. Full-board and self-catering arrangements are advertised, but current availability, inclusions and transport should be confirmed before travelling.
By public transport
Buses and shared taxis travel between Mbale and Moroto along the main road, but they do not provide practical transport through the wildlife reserve.
By air
There are no regular commercial flights directly into Pian Upe. Charter aircraft may use airstrips in or around the reserve when runway and weather conditions permit.
The reserve is explored by four-wheel-drive safari vehicle. Roads are mostly unpaved and can include deep ruts, rocks, washouts, seasonal streams and sticky black-cotton mud.
