Remarkable monastery and settlement carved out of the soft rock: the church frescoes look to be 6th century. "Gümüşler" means silver, mined locally, but the place was forgotten about for centuries until rediscovered in 1962.
Eski Gümüşler or ''Old Silver' Monastery is a Byzantine-era cave monastery in the small town of Gümüşler, 10km northeast of Niğde town in Niğde province, Turkey. Built in the 10th century AD, it was in use until the Greco-Turkish population exchange in 1924. It is easily accessible by bus from Niğde.

Small but interesting museum of prehistoric material. The mummified babies and nuns are creepy. The most interesting object is the Hittite stele from circa 700 BC, depicting Tarhunzas the weather god.
