Prasat Hin Phanom Rung is a Hindu shrine dedicated to the God Shiva. It's an atmospheric pile in pretty good condition set on top of an extinct volcano. The surrounding land as far as the eye can see is flat plains, which make for some inspiring horizon gawking. Locals say to get there earlier (morning) when there will be fewer people visiting the site.
Phanom Rung Historical Park is an archaeological site in Buriram Province, in the Isan region of Thailand. It covers the ruins of Prasat Phanom Rung, a Buddhist-Hindu Khmer Empire temple complex of sandstone and laterite set on the rim of an extinct volcano at 402 metres (1,319 ft) elevation. It was built between the 10th and 13th centuries, originally as a Hindu religious site, and later became a Buddhist site. It was built at a time when Khmer social-political influences were significant in Buriram province.

ปราสาทหินเมืองต่ำ
A Khmer sanctuary with outstanding architecture. Don’t forget to visit the site tourist information centre between the school and the lake outside site, outside the park on the road - it’s quite well hidden but has free pamphlets in several languages (incl. English) as well and a small exhibition. Today, anyone can find sanctuary in the peaceful gardens surrounding the ruins. Take a picnic.
