The nature reserve is a very special place with grassy meadows and conifer forests; it preserves a soldier's torp (i.e., cottage) from the 17th century that you can enter; walking from Storsjöstrand is very easy and provides a great hike with views of the lake; starting at the parking lot does require a steep uphill climb.
Yxnås Nature Reserve is a natural preserve between Alingsås and Vårgårda in West Sweden. It has national significance and is protected as a part of Natura 2000; its national interest is derived from its unique agricultural landscape and cultural heritage. The preserve characterizes the life of the 19th century for tenant farmers or torpare, as they are called in Swedish.

This impressive ruin of a 17th century mill can be seen along the blue marked path in the Hjortmarka nature reserve; the dam up the path is also very impressive and fun to walk over and imagine the work required to build the structure so many years ago. The ruins of this 17th-century mill are right along a hiking trail allowing passersby to imagine what life was like in the area several hundred years ago as they picture where the waterwheel turned and walk across the millpond's dam. This extravagant relic is a bonus to an already great trek.
