The culmination of Holy Week is celebrated on Easter Sunday (declared an event of regional interest). The town square is full of people dressed in local costumes. They sing, dance, eat and drink to the beat of Chíviri. The following day, Easter Monday, is a holiday in the city and locals have the custom of going to the countryside for picnics.
The chíviri is a popular festival which takes place in the Spanish town of Trujillo. It started in the beginning of the 19th century as the culmination of Easter, on Resurrection Sunday. The main square became a meeting point for people dressed in typical regional costume who sing, dance, eat and drink to the beat of popular songs. The following Monday is a holiday in the city. On this day it is traditional for celebrants to find a place in the countryside to partake in a picnic.
