It is a castle on a cliff between the beach of La Fosca and the cove of S'Alguer. Only some tower bases and some walls are preserved. The castle was built on a Roman villa which, in turn, was probably built on an Iberian settlement. It is first mentioned in 1063 in a parchment document that is preserved in the archives of the monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants. During the Middle Ages it was owned by different feudal lords. During the War of the Remences it was demolished almost in its entirety and was abandoned until in the 16th-17th centuries it was converted into a farmhouse
The Castell de Sant Esteve de Mar is a ruined castle perched atop a cliff in the town of Palamós, in Baix Empordà, between La Fosca and the Cala s'Alguer. Only the bases of some towers and some walls remain, and is currently surrounded by a fence that prevents access to visitors. It is accessed from the path leading from the beach of Fosca to S'Alguer that forms part of the GR 92 long distance footpath.
