It was founded between 1758 and 1788 by Charles III as a permanent garrison to monitor the Monfragüe area, which was plagued by banditry at the time. Attacks between the Puente del Cardenal and the Puerto de la Serrana were very frequent. The settlement included a barracks, a rectory, a church, and a school, and was equipped with water fountains to supply the residents. It never grew to have a large population, and consequently remained a hamlet of Serradilla. Today is the main entrance to the national park.
