Excellent art collection in the former Convent of San Francisco, including two Phoenician sarcophagi, a statue of Roman Emperor Trajan, and works by Zurbarán, Murillo and Rubens. The museum was founded in 1970 by merging an archaeological and a fine art section so its collection bookends Andalusian culture but doesn't cover the middle period.

Lookout tower completed in 1778 to observe vessels approaching the harbour. It houses a museum about the city's carnival tradition, but the highlight is the camera obscura. Installed in 1994, this projects a panorama of the city onto a viewing disc. Guided tours are alternately in Spanish or English.
Ornate church built 1685-1719. It served as the parliament building during the Napoleonic occupation of Spain, so it was here that the Constitution of 1812 was signed.
Striking yellow-domed structure, in full La Catedral de Santa Cruz sobre las Aguas, the Cathedral of the Holy Cross over the Waters, as its diocese spans the straits to Ceuta. Construction began in 1722 to a Baroque / rococo design but dragged on for 116 years, so completion in 1838 was in neoclassical style. A suggested circuit is the High Altar, "Ecce Homo", procession of Corpus Christi, crypt and sacristry. Then ascend the east tower, Torre del reloj (same ticket), for a panorama of the city. Be prepared for a din if the bells start chiming.
This large Roman theatre was only discovered in 1980: a fire destroyed derelict warehouses to expose medieval foundation stones, which in turn lay upon much older masonry. The theatre was one of the largest of the Roman Empire, built in the 1st century AD and abandoned in the 4th, to be covered by later structures. Excavations continue so you can't enter the body of the theatre, but there's an exhibition and viewing gallery.
