The bridge replaced the old boat passages, which were the only means of crossing the river at Amposta until then. The bridge was located on the road from Barcelona to Valencia and was built on the initiative of the municipal council led by mayor Joan Palau i Miralles, with the support of the deputy from Tortosa Agustí Querol i Subirats. The first project of 1907 was rejected and the works did not begin until 1915. On August 15, the laying of the first stone took place. In 1938, during the Civil War, the bridge suffered two attacks by the Italian legionary aviation that was part of the army of the dictator Franco; the last was on March 10, 1938. This was definitive, since the entire structure was destroyed by the effect of the incendiary bombs. It was reopened on October 4, 1939.
