The town of Boí was a small walled town that had grown up next to what was the most important castle in the valley, although only a few vestiges remain today. Boí Castle gave its name to the town and the entire valley. The town belonged to the jurisdiction of Mr. d'Erill, who distinguished himself in various feats of arms in the service of the counts of Pallars. This created favourable conditions to start the renovation and construction of many churches in its territory. The construction and interior paintings date from the 11th century. With the form ipsa illa de Bogin, the town of Boí is already mentioned in 1064, when, together with the rest of the churches and places in the valley, it was the subject of sale and exchange
Sant Joan de Boí is a Romanesque church situated in the territory of Vall de Boí, a commune in the valley of the same name, in the Province of Lleida in the autonomous community of Catalonia in Spain.
