One of only few folk villages which survived intact in Central Europe and is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It was a farming village, mostly sheep but also cattle, pigs and goats, paying a small tax to the Lilavské estate. The population peaked at 345 in 1869. Vlkolínec is famous for its folk architecture. Two of 45 houses can be visited from the inside, and there is a small art gallery, a church and a cemetery. In the summer various cultural activities take place, included "Sunday in Vlkolínec" on the last Sunday in July. The village can only be reached by car (private or taxi). Most houses are inhabited, so please respect people's privacy.
Vlkolínec is a village under the administration of the town of Ružomberok in Slovakia. Historically, however, it was a separate village. The first written mention of the village came from 1376 and after 1882 it became part of Ružomberok. Its name is probably derived from the Slovak word "vlk", i.e. wolf.
