The old town encompasses the historic core of the city, which is a set of buildings around King Peter I Square and Freedom Square. The city core was formed in the second half of the 18th century, but the most valuable area of the core, with public and representative buildings, was created at the beginning of the 19th century. The city squares, the Great Market (King Peter I Square), the Grain Market (Freedom Square) and the Square in front of the Catholic Church were established at the turn of the century.
