At the start of the track is a large memorial to Captain James Cook. This was the place where Cook spent the most time (a total of 170 days) on his three voyages which visited New Zealand. The memorial was unveiled in 1913, with 2000 people watching the ceremony.
Meretoto / Ship Cove is a small bay in the Marlborough Sounds in New Zealand. It is located near the entrance of Queen Charlotte Sound / Tōtaranui, west of nearby Motuara Island and Long Island.
