Santa Iglesia Catedral del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús
Beautiful modern cathedral built in the 20th century with graceful arches dominating roof lines and doorways. The inside is spectacularly bright with enormous stained glass windows behind the altar which features several huge sculptures.
Small regional history museum with 3 main galleries. One focuses on the story of Jose Maria Morelos, the second focuses on exhibits about Ecatepec, and the third features a fossilized skeleton of a mammoth that was found in the area in the 1990s. (The mammoth is the museum's most popular attraction!).
Archaeological museum that tells the story of "Tepexpan Man", a human skeleton found in Lake Texcoco in 1947 by German archaeologist, Helmut de Terra. At first it was estimated to be some 10,000 years old, but later radiocarbon analysis determined it to date from 2,700 BC, making it about 4700 years old. The initial miscalculation was blamed on the skeleton's position being near mammoth bones and other relics much older than the skeleton itself. It is a small, focused, academic museum but interesting to visitors with an interest in anthropology and how humans spread across the Americas.
