Balancán is a small city of about 14,000 people (2020) in the Mexican state of Tabasco in the Yucatán Peninsula. The town saw upheaval and conflict through the colonial era with the local Maya community resisting Spanish invaders. Outsiders meet a considerably warmer reception today and the town is a good stop for eco-travelers interested in the region's many rainforests as well as travelers exploring Maya civilization who will want to visit the Moral Reforma archaeological zone and the Museo José Gómez Panaco in town.

Zocalo
The town's main plaza is a focal point for the community with benches, walkways, a large kiosk, and a water fountain. Adjacent to the town hall and the main church (San Marcos).
Small regional museum focused on the history and culture of the local Maya community. The museum has more than 1,000 artifacts in its collection, most relics from local Maya sites like the well-known Moral Reforma, but also from lesser known sites that are not open to the public (Santa Elena and Aguada Fenix).
St. Mark's Church
Main church in Balancan.
Church of our Lord of Tila
One of the most stunningly visual churches in all of Mexico, a veritable explosion of colors. Each swath of color represents a miracle (or an instance of the miracle of love).
One of the least visited Mayan sites. You are likely to be the only visitor, though INAH staff are on site. There is a parking lot and restrooms, but limited facilities. Bring your own water, sunscreen, and mosquito spray. There is no nearby town. A small waterfall, Cascada de la Reforma Moral is about 500 meters from the archaeological site.
Bright, colorful, clean, family-friendly place serving traditional Mexican cuisine. Eggs, sweet breads, omelletes in the morning, tortas, chicken and seafood in the evening. Credit cards accepted.
Fresh brewed coffee, cappuccino, latte and other coffee drinks. Light fare such as crepes and bakery treats.
Coffee, breakfast, and light food. The panuchos are recommended.
Basic hotel, has air conditioned rooms.
Clean, comfortable rooms with TV, WiFi, A/C.
Bare bones budget hotel with tidy rooms but many lapses in maintenance. Check TV and AC before accepting the room because they often don't work.
By combi
Combis (colectivos) are commonly used to get to nearby towns or tourist destinations.
The town is fairly small but generally stretches out along the Usamacinta River, so distances can be fairly long. A bike is a better choice for getting around in town.
