By train
Shimane is on the Japan Rail San'in Main Line, which runs along western Honshu's sea coast between Kyoto and Shimonoseki.
By bus
The best way to get around Shimane is to drive. Most towns and cities, especially those on the coast, can also reached by train. Buses go pretty much everywhere, but some places may only have a few buses a day.

Matsue (松江) is an old castle town at the heart of Izumo Province (present-day Shimane Prefecture), and with a population of approximately 207,000 is its largest city.
Izumo (出雲市) is a city in Shimane Prefecture with a population of around 150,000 people and a land area of 543.43km². It's located near Matsue.
Hamada (浜田市) is a city in Shimane on the JR San'in Main Line.
Tsuwano (津和野町) is a town in Shimane Prefecture, Japan. It's on the border with Yamaguchi Prefecture.
Masuda (益田市) is a small city of a little more than 50,000 people in Shimane Prefecture. It is the birthplace of Kakinomoto Hitomaro.
Gotsu (江津市) is a city in Shimane prefecture.
Ōda (大田市) is a city in Shimane. Yunotsu hot springs area in it has a separate article.
Yunotsu (温泉津) is a hot spring town in Shimane. Merged into Oda city in 2005.
